In a First, Collision of Neutron Stars Detected

For the first time, scientists have found conclusive evidence that short gamma ray burst, often observed by satellites, are indeed created by colliding neutron stars, something only speculated for decades. Joint observations have also given them an independent way of measuring the expansion rate of the universe.  Continue reading “In a First, Collision of Neutron Stars Detected”

Explain Mysterious Dimming Star

Massimo Marengo’s work in stellar astrophysics keeps returning to the mysterious dimming of Tabby’s star some 1,000 light years from Earth. This particular middle-aged star — KIC 8462852, also known as Tabby’s Star or Bayesian’s Star, after Tabatha Bayesian, a Louisiana State University astronomer and lead author of a 2016 paper introducing the star — is an interesting case. Brain Waves Reflect Types Of Learning

Figuring out how to pedal a bike and memorizing the rules of chess require two different types of learning, and now for the first time, researchers have been able to distinguish each type of learning by the brain-wave patterns it produces. Continue reading “Brain Waves Reflect Types Of Learning”

Intense storms batter Saturn’s largest moon

Titan, the largest of Saturn’s more than 60 moons, has surprisingly intense rainstorms, according to research by a team of UCLA planetary scientists and geologists. Although the storms are relatively rare — they occur less than once per Titan year, which is 29 and a half Earth years — they occur much more frequently than the scientists expected.
